Nightscout data analysis: recurring issues and patterns
This page helps you look beyond a single Nightscout chart and focus on recurring patterns: when lows occur, when glucose regularly rises after meals and where persistent issues appear most often.
Patterns to look for in Nightscout data
- Overnight lows — do glucose drops recur at night or toward morning?
- High glucose after meals — at which times and after which meals does glucose regularly rise?
- Rises recurring at particular times — for example, in the morning, after dinner or before bed.
- Frequent lows after a correction or bolus — does the same pattern follow an additional insulin dose or a meal?
- Unstable periods — when does glucose frequently rise and fall sharply without a stable pattern?
How to analyze patterns without drawing false conclusions
- Do not draw conclusions from one number or one day: recurrence matters more than an isolated episode.
- Review nights separately: recurring lows, drops and excessive background-insulin effects are often more apparent then.
- Review several consecutive days: a pattern is useful when it repeats.
- Look at sustained high glucose after meals, in the morning or at particular times, as well as at lows.
What to do next
This analysis makes it easier to decide what to review next: overnight background insulin, responses to meals, frequent corrections or recurring issues at the same times of day.
